FINAL IMAGE CAPTURES AND ARCHITECTURE

The office space for powerful political figure Angela Merkel was designed as a representation of her influential views within society. The office itself houses her departments and was created as an open space providing an abundant of natural lighting exposed from the vertical elements providing the basis of an efficient work environment. The exterior of the bridge is a visual model of Merkel’s work ethic, the vertical compressed elements illustrate the intensity of her power and influence in delivering her message. The bridges compressed elements appear to be pushing forward from the landscape, pushing from a boundary which is Angela Merkel; her power is about pushing forward the views of those within society which she represents.

The core concept in designing the office space for Helen Keller was to create a space that opened a new experience to the surrounding environment stimulating her senses of smell and touch and allowing her to become part of the environment. The bridge is a representation of self empowering and ambition which Keller has advocated throughout her life. These traits have become the survival in times when she has had to catch and support herself during these struggles. In essence the bridge acts as metaphor of her life journey, catching and supporting her from the powerful and compressed structural elements which protrude from the adjoining office.

The table focuses as the meeting point for these two powerful and influential individuals, acting as an open forum to discuss important issues and views. The thick curved elements beneath the table top are crucially supported by the intermediate cables representing the united power between Helen Keller and Angela Merkel. The combing of two elements demonstrates past experiences and determination necessary in reaching goals and empowering others.

The combined meeting space is the central area on the valley floor and is the focal point which demonstrates the collaboration of these two diverse individuals. The dedicated passageway is designed to guide Helen Keller from her lift to the table with ease.

PRELIMINARY BRIDGE

Angela Merkel:
This part of the bridge resembles Angela Merkel power in society through the notion of compression, as her decision in government has a flown on effect in society as the compression will be felt through society. Her position is in fact to push the facts forward through government as she is acting on behalf of the people that have elected her into government.

Helen Keller:
The Bridge which incorporates slings merging with the twisted steel members symbolises the powerful and ambitious individual that is Helen Keller. The compressed steel members represent the wide acceptance of society and continuing inspiration from Helen Keller. The elements of the Bridge is to allow her to explore her senses of smell and touch within the surrounding environment, the height and openness allow her to feel the breeze around her.

The first female chancellor became one of the longest-serving leaders among major powers. Her sensations are for the most part vicarious, as she writes of things beyond her power of perception and with the assurance of one who had verified every word.With this she formed a coalition, which gave her the chance to enact the kind of liberalizing plans she proposed.

She doesn't plan on being alone when it comes to her relationship. “I feel encouraged. I get more eager and climb higher and begin to see widening horizons”. For now, she is embracing her work life.

She feels very grateful to have so much work, especially with the economy how it is.As she took a tough line in months of negotiations with a crusading humanitarian who espoused Socialism; and energized movements that revolutionized the crisis threatened to spread.

She sought to rebuild her standing by a much less glamorous life as her ideal situation would be to live on a farm in a solar-powered house with a hammock and a vegetable patch. Her remarkable mind unfolded, and she was in and of the world, a full and happy participant in life.

Her government became the most vocal group who were resisting calls for large-scale spending or deep interest rate cuts to help buoy not only their own economy.She always insisted that there was nothing mysterious or miraculous about her achievements. All that she was and did, she said, could be explained directly in her hand and shaped with her mind.

Level 3 Final Five Images

The final developed model has strong correlation with the Electro Liquid Quote, as the quote reflects the natural selection of evolution and the powerful acting form of selection. The model demonstrates this through features of dominance within sections of the structure, demonstrating power over the other. The model represents the high contrast of vertical and horizontal lineal elements and the erratic interaction between the used forms emphasising harmony and balance within the two laboratories and intermediate meeting place.

The picture above shows Charles Darwin’s lab and the ramp leading up from the lab to the covered meeting place. The close location to the water is ideal for Charles Darwin’s continuing studies of evolution.

The picture above shows the entry to the second lab of Stephen Hawking, the ramp and path to his lab is shown behind the elevated mound, the low grade of the ramp was made for the easy access for Stephens’s wheelchair. The location of the lab is ideal for high elevated views.

The picture above shows the meeting place for Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking. The meeting place is covered and is located in an elevated position. The meeting place is the central point where both ramps lead to. The ramp to the lab below is down the right hand side of the image and the ramp leading to Stephen Hawkins lab is to the left of the meeting place.

Reflection on the 'Black Box'

The chosen image represents the high contrast of vertical and horizontal lineal elements and the erratic interaction between the used forms. The image has developed an immense influence within my design, with a combination of vertical and horizontal solid and floating forms which are all connected to create one form. As reflected in the image, my design encompasses a strong repetition of lineal elements which supports and defines the overall solid structure, while maintaining a floating quality. The image and my design utilize the same geometric shape in repetition, which emphasise harmony and balance. As in the image the side component appears to being pushing off the main wall and structure with the use of the lineal elements, this concept is seen through my design with the main structure elevated off the ground.

FINAL SKETCHUP MODEL IMAGES

The final developed sketch up model is heavily influenced from both of my draft sketch up models. The word Catch is used to symbolise the top studio for Artist Ricky Swallow, while below the word motionless is used for Artist Patricia Piccinini. In the final Model illustrated, I have applied the top studio from my second draft as the final top studio, as well as the top studio from my first draft for the final bottom studio. The textures used in the model were Cellular: Top studio, Meshed: Gallery, Dense: Below studio

The above image illustrates the view from the gallery entry point. This perspective enables the viewer to feel enclosed with the image, as if they are the person standing within the gallery. The display of the artworks within the gallery are utilizing the fins from the below studio which protrude through the ground and into the gallery space. In the distance there is an opening for people and artists to venture out and admire the open space under the top studio.

The view of this perspective encapsulates the great scale of the above studio and gallery. The angle depicts the fins from the below studio which penetrate through breaking up the ground, which also forms the foundations for the top studio. The glass skylights also appear to pierce though and break up the ground

The below studio is surrounded by earth as the fins of the studio retain back the earth keeping the studio suspended motionless from all the elements. The earth hasn’t been shown in the perspective in order to see the great scale of the studio.

Top Studio-Catch
The Top studio illustrates the “peeled” elements as if they were emerging off the studio; however each element is connected together as if to catch one another to combine one form. The suspended studio, which appears floating, is held securely by each element catching the studio from falling beneath.

Bottom Studio-Motionless
The studio is elevated from the surrounding curved elements which protect and eliminate other functions or supports from the individual pure form. The studio is hung directly beneath the gallery floor depicting a motionless pure form.

CREATIVE WORK

The creative work selected is my own work I completed in my Architectural Technology Course, at the Institute of Technology Ultimo. The brief was to produce a facade concept to an existing five storey commercial office building. The concept needed to be creative as well as achieving an environmentally sustainable rating. Inspired by linear elements in the form of sticks and the various arrangements they can be placed in. The developed concept was proven to be useful in maintaining the buildings efficiency shown in the typical sectional detail.

An impressive piece of architecture is illustrated in the image chosen of the National Portrait Gallery located in Canberra. The contemporary design of the gallery is credited by JPW John Pilton Walker Architectural, who were selected from the gallery design competition. I admire the buildings linear structure, in contrast to the raw materials with the locally sourced stone and timber and off form concrete elements. The building provides exhibition space for approximately 500 portraits, in a simple configuration of day-light galleries as well as responding and interacting with the alignments and levels around the site that it is situated on. The gallery is light with natural light provided by sophisticated windows controlled by a simple blind system reducing the need for artificial lighting.

SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

This image taken of my lemon tree in my back yard defines something beautiful to me. Living on acres means the natural formation acts as an inspiration to my architectural designs leading me to translate these elements into concepts that work with environment. I believe architecture and the natural environment should unite together as sustainability is becoming a factor in today’s society. The leaf also sparks many memories I have had in my younger days helping my late grandfather watering the trees and looking after the vegetables. Growing fruit and vegetables in the backyard is part of my Italian heritage and will always be a part of me.
